🛑 Mandatory Check: What the New 12/24 Rule Means for Your Microlight Licence

If you hold a legacy PPL Microlight licence, your renewal process has changed. The optional framework for instructional time is now over.

Effective today, October 1, 2025, the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has implemented the 12-in-24 month rule for licence revalidation. This change creates a new, mandatory requirement for every pilot to maintain their flying currency.

Your Licence Maintenance Just Became Mandatory

The biggest change is the introduction of a legally required instructional flight:

  • Dual Instruction Mandate: To revalidate your licence, you must complete a minimum of one hour of instructional flight with a qualified instructor every two years. This is now a compulsory compliance requirement, no longer optional or just recommended.

  • Total Time Requirement: You must log a minimum of 12 hours of total flight time in the 24 months preceding your licence expiry.

This means the instructional flight is now a fixed, non-negotiable step in maintaining your currency.

⏱️ The Critical Transition Deadline

The switch to the new system is mandatory for all legacy PPL Microlight holders. You must transition upon your next revalidation cycle.

  • Hard Deadline: All pilots who fly under the old rules must transition. By November 1, 2026, it will become illegal to fly on a rating renewed under the old system.

  • New Paperwork: The revalidation mechanism is also changing. You will be moving from the traditional logbook stamp to receiving a new 'ratings page' signed off by an authorized examiner or the CAA.

This period is projected to cause a high-demand shock for instructor time. We strongly urge you to book your check early to avoid the inevitable rush as the 2026 deadline approaches.
